8 of our favourite events in Bristol for small businesses and freelancers (and one in Cardiff)

When small business and networking events are done well, they’re the best – you get to meet interesting people, make business connections, and often you can learn a lot too.

Networking and business events can be tricky for me as an introvert, however, there are a bunch of Bristol-based events that we at Studio Cotton really enjoy, that are open to all kinds of small business owners,  freelancers and creatives alike.

We have found it a liiiil tricky to find loads of events that fit the bill (and we wanted to only include events that we know are good, first-hand) but I’d love it if you could drop me an email if you know of some lovely inclusive small business meet-up/networking/co-working events that we’ve missed!

We’d totally love to attend and shout you out too. Email me at lyzi@studiocotton.co.uk and I’ll put it to the (more extroverted) team.

Now let’s get into the tried-and-tested small business and freelancer events in Bristol that we totes rate.

Real Life Social

Artist Residence Bristol, St Paul's BS2 8SA

The lovely Lou Chudley from Spark Social is an Instagram specialist, and alongside her Instagram coaching, she also holds the Real Life Social every 2 months, bringing creatives and freelancers together in the Library at Artist Residence.

Aime goes regularly, Cai has been too, and I'd been meaning to go along since forever, and finally made it in March to catch up with some lovely people - here I am pictured with OG blogger pals, Charlie Swift and Franky Shanahan.

Tickets are £8.50, which includes a drink and biscuits. They always sell out quickly, so use the link below to sign up to be notified about the next event, and follow Lou @spark_social on Instagram.

Rules of Engagement

DeskLodge, Redcliffe Way, BS1 6NL

RoE is a brilliant bi-monthly marketing event in Bristol, with talks from experts on social media, content, design, tech and more - I particularly enjoy their regular Social Media Sin Bin section.

Our very own Studio Cotton founder Aime did a talk on SEO back in March 2024, which as always, was a real hit.

Along with all that, you also get slices from Bristolian pizza-slingers Pizzarova, and drinks too, for a very affordable £10.

Follow RoE on Instagram for updates.

Social Circle Network

Various locations in Bristol

The Social Circle Network holds monthly networking events, co-working days, and workshops hosted at independent venues around Bristol, from just £6.

Aime went to their business speed dating event - which might sound cringy, but it was the opposite - organiser Sam from Hamlin & Hive thoughtfully paired business owners and prompted the conversations.

Follow @socialcircle.network on Instagram for updates, or on Eventbrite at the link below.

Studio Cotton Website Clinic

63 Broad Street, BS1 2EJ

Look, I can't do a round-up like this and not mention the wonderful Website Clinic that Aime runs on the first Friday of every month.

We open the Studio Cotton doors to give help and advice to small businesses, and to provide a space to focus on working on your website around a big table with fellow friendly small business owners.

It's 2.5 hour session for £16.10, which includes a drink and sweet treat from our neighbours, Full Court Press.

Future Leap networking events

Various locations in Bristol

Future Leap provides a hub and support network for businesses looking to progress their sustainability journey, and they hold online and in-person events.

Their regular events such as the Co-Working and Networking Lunch are held monthly, while Netwalking is every few months - that one looks right up my street (almost literally).

Follow Future Leap on Instagram for regular updates.

Put Into Practice

Various locations in Bristol

Otherwise known as PIP, this event is run by Jess Knights & supported by the Association of Illustrators - you don't need to be a member to attend, but if you are, the tickets are slightly cheaper.

Cai has been to a bunch of their events (he's there in this pic!) and says, "their unique, varied events are a great way to meet other illustrators. Sometimes it's a workshop or a panel on industry nights, other times it's a fun social drawing activity."

Follow @pipillustration on Instagram to see what events they have coming up.

Adobe Events

Worldwide

I'm sure you've heard of Adobe - they make innovative products and technology that helps you create, whether that's with Photoshop, Illustrator, or Lightroom.

They also hold events all over the world, including in Bristol, and they come very highly recommended by my creative pal Rachel.

Aime headed to their free Content Circles event about "growing your brand and community online," and said it was aimed more at content creators than businesses, but the swag was top-tier, the venue, drinks and nibbles were great. There was also opportunity to mingle and network.

Talk Event

Insole Court, Cardiff CF5 2LN

Ok, this one isn't in Bristol - Talk Event is based in Cardiff, which is only 40 minutes away, and it's a lovely excuse for a jolly across the bridge.

It's a super friendly event in a stunning venue, and they have a panel of speakers or one special guest - Aime has been a speaker for them twice.

Talk Event is a monthly event for product and service based small businesses, and tickets cost £19. You can sign up to their newsletter to get notifications about upcoming events and find out about guest speakers before anyone else.

Yonder Collective

No longer running

Finally, a special mention goes to Yonder Collective, who put on some of the best events in Bristol between 2016-2018. It was one that Aime and I both attended and loved (although different ones, and before we knew one another).

If they ever come back we'll be the first to book on. Emma and Becky created incredible tablescapes, with beautiful flowers and place settings, food, activities, and talks - so Instagrammable and classy.

The events always supported local businesses and attracted an awesome group of interesting people - I made some great business and friendship connections, who I'm still in touch with today.

So, have I missed out a small business meet up or networking event that you think we should go to? Send an email to lyzi@studiocotton.co.uk – if we attend and love it, I’ll slip it into this blog post.

Head over to the Studio Cotton blog to keep reading about stuff we love – you’ll mostly find advice for beautiful & functional websites, helpful SEO knowledge and whatnot, but sometimes Aime lets me write about silly things like drool-worthy notepads and our favourite coffee shops too.
