At Studio Cotton, we really love search engine optimisation (SEO), which is the process of optimising a website to rank higher and more often in search engine results – usually Google. A larger quantity of higher appearances means more website visits, which hopefully creates more sales and money for ya.

Over the last 3 months, we’ve been encouraging all ecommerce businesses to Christmassify their websites (and service-based businesses too, if it’s relevant) – but what about those non-Christmas SEO wins?

All the Christmas-focus means that some of the winter topics that aren’t “Christmas” get left kinda wide-open.

Although more people are searching for “Christmas” than for “winter outfit layering,” these other, less-popular terms are also way less competitive. So you can potentially pick up more views from them, because there won’t be as many brands trying to jump onto those wintery wagons.

Anyway, let’s get into it, and I’ll share an example for each so that you get what we’re saying.

Activities for...

...kids/teens/students/families/artists/solo/etc.

There are of course school and uni holidays over the winter, but there are also weekends to fill (and sometimes evenings, if you're brave), and adults need activities too, right?

This is a really good one for a product collection as well as blog posts.

Weather

Winter weather only sucks if you don't have the right gear (that's what they say, isn't it?) so if you sell clothing you could have a blog post or category about outfits/boots for snow, raincoats...

But you can relate weather to other types of businesses too.

2026 predications

The year is a great thing to add for SEO, as many of us add the year when we're searching for something and don't want old answers. Predictions for the year ahead are a great way to add that to your website.

2026 calendars/launches/events

This one should be based on the events relating to your individual industry - are there any important dates? What's coming up?

Blog: 23 special dates to gift fresh flowers from your business

These topics can be used for blog posts, collections of products, and in product descriptions too, but only if they’re relevant to your business pls. It’s not really going to help you if you run a jewellery brand and someone looking for “cosiest winter socks” lands on your website.

The more you use terms on your website related to what you offer, you’re more likely to reach the people who care about what you offer, and then turn those website visitors into customers too. Just remember to post that content at least 6 weeks in advance, so that Google has a chance to crawl and index it.

That was a lot… but if it wasn’t enough, a) I’m a bit worried about you, and b) check out our blog post 56 seasons, occasions, & times for your UK blog and content planning.

Writing blog posts can be hard even when you’ve got the dates and topics sorted, so here are a couple more useful blog-writing blog posts: Blog SEO: 41 content ideas for your listicle, annnddd How to write great blog titles with our NASALS mnemonic.
